Strengthening 798's connectivity is the strategy for unfolding 798's dynamic potential as a resilient creative cluster and as China’s Creative Lab.

INbetweenSTITUTE reinserts art production in 798. INbetweenSTITUTE is a new open infrastructure, bridging the private space of artistic creation (ateliers, studios) and the public spaces of the audience (public showcase, museum, gallery, theater, concert hall…). INbetweenSTITUTE provides facilities for co-creation, bringing art to the next level.

Instead of a mono-functional fixed identity (an artificial “New Brand") we propose a process-oriented strategy for enhancing the creative artist networks, anchoring them into 798's urban tissue. Based on the fundamental structure of HUMAN CREATIVITY the concept develops a pragmatic PROCESS-ORIENTED STRATEGIC approach.

HYBRIDIZATION
Today we are experiencing a merging of creative fields and the emerging of the HYBRID ARTIST. Since the late 1960s, painting and sculpture are coming together with performance, video, film and sound, and various media fuse within a single artistic project. Today the influence of digital technology is anew reshaping the arts, as artists integrate virtual space, digital networks, and coding into their creative practice.

In recent decades also the boundaries between autonomous art, applied arts, and creative industry are blurring. The strict differentiation between different activities such as R&D, education, production, communication, and commerce is becoming obsolete and a HYBRID PRACTICE is emerging.

Similar to the co-creation in other fields (Wikipedia being the most known example), artists and creative professionals interact and actively involve their online and on-site audiences. INbetweenINSTITUTE provides a new HYBRID INFRASTRUCTURE that fuses the lonely private space of the artist/creative professional with the public spaces of the audience, creating a HYBRID PLATFORM for co-creation.

Creative HYBRID COMMUNITIES – combined on-site and online - are increasingly becoming part of the co-creation process. A strategy aiming to strengthening the creative networks should therefore develop an integrated HYBRID SPACE approach, addressing the HYBRID NETWORKS, the combined physical networks in urban space and digital networks in virtual spaces. Fusing digital and physical networks enhances the ‘territorialization’ of the glocal communities into 798.

CREATIVE MODES
The structure of the HUMAN MIND is the metaphor and base for the proposed creative network structure. The two dominant modes of attention of our mind are:
the network of neurons that is focused: the executive, undistracted mode
the network of neurons that is wandering: the daydreaming mode enabling new unexpected synapses

The neuron structure of the creative brain with its two functioning modes forms the base for a process-oriented strategy for reinforcing the creative networks:

1. A series of CREATIVE LABs correspond to the FOCUSED MODE of the creative process. These are TEMPORARY NODES, creative punctures embeding virtual interaction in 798’s urban space.

2. Corresponding to the WANDERING MODE of the creative process, the CREATIVE CONNECTIONS between the Creative Lab nodes, involve in the co-creative experience the public [wandering] in 798’s physical urban space networks. smARTOURism strategies, targeting the creative class and the art audiences, tap into 798's potential and reconfigure, re-focus, tourism to re-address the creative and art communities.

Both modes – the Creative Labs and the Creative Connections – are of a hybrid character, having a combined virtual and physical dimension.

798+
The concept integrates three levels:
- the MICRO-LEVEL: the Creative Labs as creative nodes within 798
- the MESO-LEVEL: 798 as a creative network (with exclusive access to 798’s data-cloud)
- the MACRO-LEVEL: 798 as China's creative hub and as a motor for fostering creativity worldwide

CREATIVE+
798 encompasses classical artistic expressions as well as fosters new creative developments. 798's program includes - next to the classical art institutions such as museums and galleries – process-oriented institutions such as a CURATORS LAB, an ARCHIVE LAB, a HYBRID HERITAGE LAB, and a FUTURE-ARTS LAB…

At the Creative Labs, artists and creative professionals are involved in co-creative innovation. They work on issues relevant to society and to the creative and art community: Food, Health, Robotics, Gaming, Smart Materials, Mechatronics, Coding, 3D-Printing, Performance, Hybrid Theory … Creative Labs are platforms pushing CROSS-OVER innovation a step further, expanding the creative territories into new hybrid fields: ACCELERATE, COLLIDE, FUSE…

IDENSITY
The concept follows the Idensity™-paradigme developed by Hybrid Space Lab for the Dutch government think tank “Infodrome” in 1999 (see “The Use of Space in the Information-Communication Age”, Sikiaridi and Vogelaar):

“Idensity™ does not differentiate between information/communication networks and urban/architectural environments and offers an integrated model for dealing with "hybrid" (media and "real") space in the information/communication age. The model can incorporate the widest range of future (communication) spaces.

Idensity™ is a composite term consisting of the combination of the word "density" of real (urban) and "virtual" (media) communication spaces (density of connections) and of the word "identity". But it is not a mere summation of these two terms; it is a fusion, as it inverts "identity", linking it to communication: "identity" being defined by connectivity.”
